Earlier this evening, Rick Riordan was at an event in New York for BEA 2011 where both the cover art for and an excerpt of the Son of Neptune were released.

The excerpt was read out loud and I wasn't smart enough to grab a screen grab of the cover art (although I'm sure it'll be online by the end of the week), so here's a recap of what was said!

- SoN will be told in the same style as TLH was with three rotating narrators who are part of the great prophecy. One of said narrators will have the "coolest powers" out of any demigods we've seen which... um, I don't know how this is possible? What is cooler than water or fire powers, being able to fly, and raising skeleton armies?

- Tyson will make an appearance in SoN (honestly, RR, no one cares about Tyson except [livejournal.com profile] saturninepen). The other big characters will make an appearance in the series as he's said before.

- Oh, who am I kidding. No one cares about those details. What we all care about is the fact that PERCY JACKSON IS IN THE DAMN BOOK AND IS ONE OF THE NARRATORS.

It's third person Percy narration, but it's PERCY NARRATION ALL THE SAME. FUCK YEAH, MORE PERCY JACKSON.

- The cover art, from what I could see, shows Percy in the sea near a glacier on what appeared to be broken ice and holding up what RSquared called "a chicken on a stick" aka the Roman standard. Speculate about that what you will.

- Percy's not the only reason the book is called the Son of Neptune. This could connect to what he said about Tyson, but I'm putting my bets on a new kid.

- In the excerpt, which was probably from the first couple chapters since Percy hadn't gotten to the Roman Camp yet, Percy was about to get into a fight with a couple of gorgons. He encounters a weird looking woman name June, who offered him a Sadistic Choice: he could jump in the sea and live a long healthy life there, or take her to the Roman Camp where his life would be full of pain and suffering and the usual demigod life sucks spiel. Percy, obviously, takes the second option.

One of the interesting bits of "pain and suffering" June mentioned was that Percy would "lose the mark of Achilles" if he went to the Roman Camp.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, RICK RIORDAN. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ALL OF US HARDWORKING FANTHINGS PERCY. WHY.

- On the plus side, Percy would get his old life if he went to the Roman Camp. So yay?

- And finally, the most important part, and I'm probably paraphrasing on what exactly was written, but...

"He had to find Annabeth. She was the only part of his old life he was sure about."

PERCY REMEMBERS ANNABETH. ANNABETH IS THE ONLY THING PERCY REMEMBERS ABOUT HIS OLD LIFE.

PLEASE EXCUSE ME WHILE I GO DIE IN A HAPPY SHIPPER COMA.

RSquared said he'll be posting more on his blog tomorrow, so hopefully he'll release the excerpt plus the cover art. I CAN ONLY HOPE.

An excerpt from the Son of Neptune is now online! It's different from what was read at the event, but still. PERCY.
