Lost Hero Reaction Post: Part Two
Oct. 13th, 2010 05:30 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I'm finished now, so you can hit me all with your squee or RAEG or tears of despair, whatever. As always, spoilers under the cut.
First, let me jut get this off my chest.
"Exactly," Jason said. "Percy Jackson is at the other camp and probably doesn't even remember who he is."
what
WHAT
WHAT
THAT'S YOUR LAST LINE, RICK, FUCKING FOR REAL.
YOU DO REALIZE THAT BECAUSE YOU'RE WRITING THE DAMN KANE CHRONICLES TOO THAT WE HAVE TO WAIT A FUCKING YEAR FOR THIS TO BE RESOLVED, IF IT EVEN IS AT ALL. JUST ARGHHHHHHHH

i mean not that this doesn't give me a million ideas for fic especially of the percy/annabeth angst variety BUT FUCKING STILL
All right, now that I've got that off my chest, I can honestly say that I did like The Lost Hero ... when I wasn't being reminded that Percy was missing and we weren't out there looking for him. I really did start to like Jason, Piper and Leo's quest once we hit Medea and Midas, and things started rolling. Not to mention I love the idea of all the Big Bads from Greek mythology coming back to life. (Fan theory #1: Does this mean we're going to be getting a reappearance from Luke at some point?) But the instant any of them mentioned Percy, like even as "that guy Annabeth's looking for," I just got thrown out of the story because - once again - I was reminded that my favorite character is missing and these assholes DON'T GIVE A FUCK.
Don't get me wrong, I think the set-up with the exchange of leaders between the Roman and Greek camps is going to be awesome, but really, really bad choice on Rick's part to make Percy go missing before the big Save Hera quest started because his fans have the attachment to Percy first and foremost. I was expecting the quest to be to, you know, get him back and the fact that it wasn't kind of made me want to punch things. Even if I ended up kind of liking the quest in the end.
So like I said, I probably would've liked the book more if there hadn't been the specter of MISSING PERCY hanging over the entire thing. I liked the first part, liked all the Epic Battles, I started to like Jason and Piper more as the book went on, although I could really do without the shipping. And yes, we get the two of them are OMG SUPER HAWT and will make pretty babies together.
I'm ... not sure how I feel about the explanation of the Roman camp. With the amount of handwaving the Mist allows in series, it makes it completely obvious that Rick hadn't planned for the Roman camp with the previous series. I would have liked to see a least a tiny bit of foreshadowing with them in PJO, but it completely came out of nowhere. I did, however, like his explanation for why the Roman gods still existed - it's a little less complicated that having two separate pantheons, I think.
And does anyone think that there's going to be a MORE BADASS THAN THOU showdown when Percy and Jason finally meet? With everything Jason's accomplished, there's certainly going to be a contest, methinks. (Although Percy pretty much wins because, hey, he was offered immortality and pissed Zeus off by thumbing his nose at him. Jason... killed a sea monster, whoo)
Also, this leads to my Fan Theory #2: Without his memories and with the influence of the More Badass and Serious Than Thou Roman camp, Percy is going to turn into a dick. But he'll get better. Obvs.so i may or may not already be writing fic about it shut up and stop judging me
I wasn't exactly satisfied with the Thalia and Jason reunion, although it was explained pretty well. I didn't like the handwaving, "She's been at this longer than you, of course she wouldn't be surprised and accepted it as truth right away!" explanation. I liked getting the background with their mother and Zeus's relationship though. Really interesting.
And probably most surprising thing about this book?
I ENDED UP LIKING HERA, GUISE. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.
It was those scenes with her and Leo, I swear.
All right, so throw everything at me. I know some of you have lists *eyes

Date: 2010-10-13 10:44 pm (UTC)Aw hell naw. Luke's going for the Isles of the Blessed; his soul is in some baby somewhere.
As for Percy turning into a dick -- I am thinking not. And praying not. We basically got books and books of Percy not letting people bully him around. He has an intrinsic Percyness and personality that will still be there after he loses his memories. I'm thinking more that his wilder personality will clash with the "expansion, conquest, discipline" nature of the kids at Camp Purple, because Percy Jackson does not take to being disciplined, no sir. He will emerge as the alpha male/general/leader figure at Camp Purple because of his sword-fu, but then be like "k everyone needs to chillax and shoot some hoops. mandatory s'mores time." Which brings me to another thing... I wonder if Roman kids have the same ADHD that the Greek ones do? The Roman orientation seems more oriented to produce more legionaries than heroes, and they'd need discipline more than hyperactive battle reflexes.
Oh but Hera, yeah, she can babysit my kids any time. Love that crazy bitch and Leo sassing off to her.
Actually once I got over the FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF WHERE IS PERCY I hated this book a lot less, because my reaction was a lot of FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF WHERE IS PERCY HULK SMASH.

Date: 2010-10-13 10:57 pm (UTC)And Jason...he's just, I don't even know. I like his relationship with Thalia, but that's about it. I know I've ranted this elsewhere, but the stuff he's done just seems kind of overkill to me. I have a hard time buying into it, and a hard time buying into him as a character.
I like Leo the most; he's funny, I like (not the right word, but you know what I mean) his back story, and his crushing on every girl he just can't get (ever) is hilarious, but even with him, sometimes it was just like...I want Nico back =/
If Riordan doesn't bring back some of the old characters (namely Percy, Nico and Annabeth. And moar Rachel), I don't know that I'll be able to like this series as much. I mean, yeah, I liked The Lost Hero, but I just can't get into the characters.
You idea about Percy becoming a complete dick is really interesting, though; I hadn't even thought about that, but it's a complete possibility. EVEN MOAR ANNABETH ANGST!
God, I need to get some of this out in fic, I've ranted and posted in like three different places and it's not helping me any ,_____,
OKAY, SPECULATION TIME.
Who do you think the other four half-bloods will be? They said it would be a mix of Romans and Greeks, and as it stands it's two Greeks and one Roman.
My problem is I can find viable excuses for Percy, Annabeth and Nico to be included in there as well, but 1) I can't tell if I'm just making mountains out of molehill clues because I want them back and 2) that would make a ratio of at least five Greeks to two Romans, and I figured it would be more balanced than that.

Date: 2010-10-13 11:15 pm (UTC)although I'm afraid RR's gonna kill her off :Sbut between her and Nico, she'd probably get kicked out. It'd be more interesting, imo, if she was the only one out of the three that became part of the seven.I definitely like Leo the most out of the three new kids. My affection for Piper comes and goes, but I think the reason I'm annoyed with Jason is because he's automatically awesome and we don't get to see that. We get to see Percy develop into awesomesauce over the course of five books; Jason did all that developing in the background and is just remembering that it's happening.

The whole third person thing was kind of hard to get used to. I didn't seem to reach out for the characters like I did in the first person ones. And it was definitely difficult for me to warm up to Jason and Piper (Leo was no prob That little jokester) - and, to be honest, I'm still not cozy with them, but I'm cozier than when I started reading.
Every time I got to a Piper or Jason chapter, I kept thinking "Oh shit, It's this kid again."AND OMG - WHEN FESTUS DIES. HAPPY THE DRAGON WILL NEVER BE HAPPY AGAIN.For the first half of the book, I looked forward to Leo's chapters. But It started getting better in the middle of the book - when all of the Jason/Piper started to die down.
I'm choking on it D:But on the good side, ANNABETH/RACHEL FRIENDSHIP MOMENTS. <3 Also, WILLIAM SOLACE. But then, there's Miranda Gardiner. Who the hell is Miranda? I only know Katie. :| GTFO Miranda.
And when Annabeth went out to look for Percy - it was more of a brief "I'm going to look for my missing boyfriend that you don't care about - don't mind me." But they are newbies, I can't blame them. They haven't even met the guy.
From a different perspective, CHB and it's previous campers seem very different. Like we've just learned about something that Percy never knew/wouldn't tell us. You read about the stories of Beckendorf and Silena and other people and you wouldn't have thought that they had it that rough - that all of that was hidden from you. And I'm hoping that they'll be more of these in the future books. It's like we're not just learning about Jason or Piper or Leo or Percy and Annabeth; we're getting bits and pieces of background character. It's nice c:
I can't wait until all of this gets on the RPG

From:no subject
Date: 2010-10-14 06:07 pm (UTC)-Leo is awesome, as I've probably stated at least ten times already. I liked Piper a whole lot more by the end (when she stopped being all wah, why doesn't Jason remember meeeee and our epic love? and actually GOT A BACKBONE). And Jason... ehh. Jury's still out on him. He's kind of one-dimensional, and this is probably because we don't get that first-person narration that fleshed out Percy so well.
-I kind of suspected there was going to be a Roman demigod camp as soon as they started emphasizing Jason's ~purple shirt~, so the end didn't surprise me, and thanks to my impatient page-flipping, neither did the reveal about Percy's whereabouts.
-WHERE THE FUCK IS NICO? my RAEG, let me show you it! (and I really don't like that he was mentioned only ONCE in passing. Bitch, please!)
-THALIA. I am sooo glad she was back in a bigger role in this book, considering she got seriously shafted in TLO. But I am a little surprised that even Annabeth didn't know about Jason; I would've thought that was something Thalia would mention, y'know?
-I kind of ship Leo/Thalia. A little.
Which makes me feel like I'm betraying the Luke/Thalia ship, oh agony!-As suggested below, I think the Roman camp should be known as Camp Bizarro. Yep.
So did I like this book? A lot, yeah. And dammit, I want the second, not another Kane Chronicles book (which, let's be honest, I'm not even sure I want to read...).

Date: 2010-10-14 07:00 pm (UTC)While I agree that the lack of Nico deserves nothing by RAEG, I am pleased that he was out looking for Percy, and not just...doing something. Also, this is kind of random, but while we're on the subject of Nico, I kind of loved the detail that he's only at camp sometimes.
THALIA. I am sooo glad she was back in a bigger role in this book, considering she got seriously shafted in TLO. But I am a little surprised that even Annabeth didn't know about Jason; I would've thought that was something Thalia would mention, y'know?
That's what was most confusing for me about Jason was just, whyyy has Thalia never mentioned him before. I can understand her not wanting to talk about it, I suppose, and especially since when you think about it, she really didn't know Luke and Annabeth for very long before she was tree-ified, but still.
I was happy she had a decent role as well, and not just the way she popped up in TLO; I was pretty convinced she would be dropped forever after the last series because of how hard she was shoved in the corner, but this gives me hope that she'll pop up again a few times.

Date: 2010-10-14 07:09 pm (UTC)They're going to Greece, and I think that that's awesome, but I'm not sure? I think my thing is I don't really fully understand why it has to be fought in Greece; right now, it just seems like Riordan's trying to outdo himself and avoid being redundant by fighting in Manhattan again. Maybe I just missed that part, but yeah....

Date: 2010-10-14 07:53 pm (UTC)I liked TLH but it seemed like Leo was the only fleshed out character. Piper seemed only to be there because R^2 needed a pretty, badass girl. And even though Jason was raised by the wolves to be all stoic and blah, maybe when he lost his memory he lost his personality too?
I actually ended up Coach Hedge, although the whole he's always knocked out for the fight was kinda tiring...D:
I totally agree with your Fan Theories. I can just imagine the Percabeth reunion and Annabeth smacking him for some dick move he pulls.
And Luke definitely needs to come back. End of story.

Date: 2010-10-15 04:56 am (UTC)I LIKED IT.
I really did. Better than the first series. /shame
I found the resurrection of mortals like Medea and Midas extremely interesting and I can't wait to see who else we'll meet.
I love Piper and Jason and want to see what will happen when he meets back up with his other girlfriend... Rayner or something? Of course, the whole thing makes me wonder... if Percy doesn't know who he is... has he found another girl?
I think Riordan meant for the Roman kids to be there all along. First off, because he said so in an interview. Something about having this whole series planned out before he even wrote the first one. Second, that whole Mt. Tam thing. The entrance to the camp is obviously somewhere down that highway Jason was looking at as they were flying to the Wolf House.
In order to drag this whole Gaea thing out, I think the next book will have to focus on the quest to actually find Percy. And Annabeth will be there, so I'm like bouncing up and down in anticipation for this next book. Unless of course Riordan mainly focuses on Percy and his time spent at the Roman camp. Maybe it'll start out the way this book did, with Percy waking up wherever and then switch back and forth between him and whatever other demigods he's found and befriended. After all, it is called The Heroes of Olympus, not Jason and Whatever so maybe Jason won't be the main focus of all five books.

Better than the first series?!?
Good for you?
Well um. Okay.
I found the resurrection of mortals like Medea and Midas extremely interesting and I can't wait to see who else we'll meet.
THIS so much. Medea and Midas were amazing, probably my favorite parts of the book apart from all the camp and Percy/Annabeth stuff.
Re: your last paragraph, either of these stories (the quest to find Percy or Percy's time at Camp Purple) would be fine with me, as long as the book is actually about Percy. Because I can't take anymore of this Jason business without some awesome Percy to back it up.
