Stargate Universe 1x01 and 1x02: Air

greenconversesOkay, so I did tune into Stargate Universe last night and it wasn't half-bad. I don't know if I'm interested enough to make it my new MUST-SEE Friday night show, but I'll probably watch it anyway. Mostly for Eli and Stone Scott.
SGU definitely has a whole different feel than SG-1 and SGA, which is obviously what TPTB were going for with the whole ~edgy~ and ~young~ cast, and that's a really good thing. The premieres of SG-1 and SGA take so long to get into because it's like INFODUMPINFODUMPINFODUMP...and now let's throw some action in...and back to the INFODUMP. SGU got right into the action, and it kept up the tension throughout most of the episode. It did get kind of boring in the middle when it was like, "We're going to explore this ship over and over and over again even though we're really not finding anything new and interesting!"
Character-wise, my favorites were Lt.Stone Scott, Eli, Chloe, and Col. Young. Eli was dorky and funny in a non-annoying way -- I loved the way he was making a super dramatic, "If you find this, this is how we died," video with the KENO and Stone totally called him out on it. I want them to become BFFs sometime during the season. ;) Also, I'm torn as to whether I want to ship Stone Scott/Chloe or Eli/Chloe, but I suppose I'll wait and see with later episodes. Nothing wrong with shipping both, haha.
I have a feeling I'm going to want to punch Rush in the face in almost every episode though. The urge definitely occurred at least five times this episode.
Also, LOVED the cameos from the SG-1 cast. I squealed with glee when O'Neill showed up at Eli's door and the boring Daniel Jackson intro videos were hilarious. Sam's hair looked a little brown, and WTF was Walter doing at the Pentagon?
Anyway, what's with the Ancients just building shit, sending it out into the universe to use at a later date but never actually using it? You'd think a people as smart as the Ancients would have enough sense not to build something if they weren't going to use it -- especially something as big as that ship. But whatever. The Ancients are ridiculous.
And apparently being feverish makes me hear the wrong names of characters while watching. Who knew?

Date: 2009-10-03 08:56 pm (UTC)And yes, Matthew Scott :D I was testing myself last night to see how many names I remembered. TJ the military medic, Chloe Armstrong, Matthew Scott, Eli Wallace, Nicolas Rush, Lt. Greer, and the guy with the head injury is... Young? Something like that.
After the first two episodes, my money was on the most comms being made for Eli/Lt Scott and Chloe/Lt Scott.
ETA: Oh, I was also going to say, for all we know the Ancients did use this ship, but either they ascended with their pals or something happened to them during the last billion years. But I do agree they have never learned to put their toys away when they're done with them ;)
As far as the pace of the episode, several tv reviewers commented on it as well, but I think a slower pace -especially considering there was, like you said, an emphasis on action over infodump - is a lot better than a rushed pace, which is the mistake TPTB have made a lot in the past.
