Theories for The Lost Hero
Now that I've had time to (mostly) stop squeeing about the preview chapter from The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero, I have started theorizing and I'd rather do it in a new post than in my comments sections!
So, here we go with my theories/discussion/speculation. Everything's under the cut to avoid spoilers. Unless you saw some of the squee in the other post, that is.
- Jason, Piper, and Leo are clearly our new trio. Leo = son of Hermes, and Jason = son of Zeus or I have a theory about him that I'll touch on later. Piper, I have no clue about but I'm leaning toward a minor goddess like Peitho, goddess of persuasion, based on Leo's tiny comment about the her talking a guy into giving her a BMW or something. ADMIRE MY OVERREACTION BASED ON CONTEXT CLUES, SERIOUSLY, THEY'RE GOING INTO OVERDRIVE TODAY.
I like Jason and the fact that it's not in first person; definitely no where near as funny as Percy, but I think Leo's going to make up for that. I was giggling like crazy whenever he opened his mouth. I adore that Piper's part Native American, and I'm glad they're a little bit older than when Percy started. I always felt like Percy had too old of a voice for a 12 year old main character. And I'm guessing that Percy and Annabeth are like 18/19ish in this story?
- Butch = badass son of Iris. No self-respecting son of Ares would have a rainbow tattoo on his bicep, okay.
- I knew Percy was going to be the lost hero. Because he totally would go and get himself kidnapped at some point - it's like the one thing that hasn't happened to him yet. So now the question is who took him, who's going to get him back, and if he's going to survive for the next couple of books.
- Going off of this, would Annabeth go on the quest to get Percy back? Because having her along with the newbies would be a really easy way to ease us into the transition of not having Percy as a narrator and let us get used to the newbies with a familiar face.
- And if there's a quest, that means we'll probably get to see Rachel. And Nico at some pointbecause my OT3 love would demand nothing else too.
- Speaking of Rachel! I'm guessing that's the "she" Annabeth was referring to in the chapter. At first I thought maybe Athena had told her something about Percy being lost, but Athena would probably be cackling in glee that he was gone or something. So now I'm anticipating a Rachel-and-Annabeth showdown scene once they get to camp, which is great because those girls need more scenes together.
- IT MADE ME IRRATIONALLY HAPPY THAT PERCY WAS REFERRED TO AS ANNABETH'S BOYFRIEND IN CANON. MY SHIPPER HEART, THE JOY CANNOT BE CONTAINED.
- Rick Riordan, you pick the best place to write battle scenes, I swear.
- I remember reading something that the Roman gods were supposed to come into play with this book, which would explain why there were a couple moments when they were like, The Greek name is... with the villains and Jason... which leads me to my weirdass theory about his parentage.
Jason refers to everything with Roman terms and his coin/sword thing has a Julius Caesar on it, and his supernatural abilities would connect him to Zeus. Maybe I'm just being overeager for a mythological throwdown, but would it be possible that Jupiter is his father instead? I know kind of like the same god with different names, but canon shows that Roman deities like Pomona and Janus, if not adopted into the pantheon, exist separately on their own. Could the same be said for the bigger Roman gods? Perhaps they had their power diminished a la Pan or downsized like Helios in recent times, but they can still have kids~
Anyone else want to take a whack at that one? It just seems like it'd be too soon, even for the big philander himself, for another kid of Zeus to be popping out of the woodwork and I don't think Riordan would do a child of the Big Three as the protagonist again after Percy.
And, um, that's all I could think of right now. I'll probably have more ~thoughts~ later.
What do you think?

Annabeth is either going on Quest or going it alone. Because there is no way Percy can be missing and she is not out there kicking ass in his name. There is just no way she can lose him.
no subject
I think demigods have issues seeing through the Mist before they're claimed/realize they're demigods. Or it depends on their level of perception or maybe how strong whatever else is manipulating the Mist is.
Yeah, I honestly don't think Annabeth would sit back and let the newbies go on a quest to save Percy without her. If she isn't trying to save Percy, it wouldn't be Annabeth.

Right off I thought Jason was a son of Zeus given that he could ride the wind. But who knows. I agree, I don't think Riordan would reveal another child of the Big Three, not yet anyway... considering the pact and all that. Thalia was supposed to be Zeus' only mistake.
Piper... I don't know who she belongs to. I like your theory.
Um... I have no words for the Percy/Annabeth-ness right now. <3

I cannnot comment on P/A right not. I LOVE how she just shows up, and scares everyone with her ferocity. X)

And yeah, not terribly surprised about Percy being the lost hero. But Annabeth tearing around the country looking for him? TOTALLY AMAZING, THAT (but also not a surprise). And boyfriend!canon! <3 LOVE IT.
Nico had better show up sometime, dammit. I demand it.

I've been going through theories for Piper ever since I read the chapter. I think the description of her eyes is probably our biggest clue, but who knows....
And what about her father? We know he's Cherokee, but didn't Leo say there was something special about him as well, before he dropped the subject?
If Nico doesn't come back I'll cry. He's kinda my favorite character since Thalia joined the Hunters, and he seriously needs more page time, like now.If Jason is a son of Jupiter, it makes me wonder if Percy's got himself in trouble with the Roman side of the pantheon somehow. It would be too redundant to pull the Titans back up again, and I don't know who else it would be; the only references I found to the venti were as sons of Typhon who had connections to Aeolus, which doesn't help with figuring out who their "mistress" is, either |:
no subject
Hmm, I like the idea of Percy getting himself in trouble with the Romans. Maybe when Typhon stirred he woke up different gods that had been sleeping or something?
Also, Nico definitely needs to be in the series. I demand it.

GOD THIS PREVIEW IS SO FANTASTIC~~~~~
I disagree with the Piper (PS: wonderful, wonderful name <3) being minor god/goddess child. Leo was all hinting at how if only they knew who her dad really was. So unless she's got some very important minor for a parent like Thantos or something, I'm thinking she's one of the Twelve.
And sorry, but Zeus is too big of a possibility for anyone's parent. He is the biggest man-whore on Olympus remember?
But that Jupiter thing. That blew my mind. The Romans are invading and I'm not sure I like it. (Bunch of copy cat over Ares-like barbarians....)

When I went to Photobucket, the first thing I saw was the page with the big text "HER BOYFRIEND" and I just started flailing. Full on windmill arms and everything. FUCK YES.
Hmmm. As much as it sounds like Jason is a son of Zeus with the WINDS and the THUNDER CLOUDS, if Annabeth and Percy are only a couple years older than our new heroes, then that's pushing it a little bit -- i.e., why wasn't Jason around earlier when everybody was pointing fingers at children of the Big Three in PJO (to be fair, though, amnesia, he could have been anywhere.) Then I was leaning for one of the wind gods -- Zephyr or somebody -- because JASON, i.e., Jason and the Argonauts, they worked with wind gods for awhile (idk, it makes sense in my head.)
And then you were like, ROMAN GODS, and I was like, THIS IS WHY JESSICA IS MY FRIEND. SHE IS BRILLIANT. because it TOTS makes sense -- why Jason has a coin that has a guy on it with a laurel on his head, and why he calls Hedge a faun instead of a satyr. I DO THINK YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT. THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME.
As for Leo and Piper. One of them needs to be a child of Hermes, because someone needs to step up to the bat and make up for Luke. I get that Leo's probably more likely to be that son, but my pet theory is that Piper is the daughter of Hermes, because a) we haven't had one yet, and b) stealing a car seems like a Hermes thing to do; Hermes is the one who manipulates the Mist so that mortals overlook mythological disasters, right? I can see Piper using that "these are not the droids you are looking for" mumbo jumbo on the guy with the keys.
And that leaves Leo to be somebody else's AWESOME CHILD. Because he is EXTREMELY AWESOME. That is my full thought on Leo. It seems adequate.
Also, A++++ for having Piper be Native American, Rick Riordan. I guess he took the complaints about him having no minorities in his books to heart.
Re: Jason, though, I probably would have been okay with him being a son of Zeus if this new series was going to be set way later -- but since it's coming right on the heels of PJO, it seems ... too soon to have another son of the Big Three running around. I originally thought the new Great Prophecy was going to happen, like, twenty, thirty years down the line, and grown-up!Percy would get to do some kickass mentor stuff for the new heroes, but him getting kidnapped and held hostage works too.
Because he totally would go and get himself kidnapped at some point - it's like the one thing that hasn't happened to him yet. So now the question is who took him, who's going to get him back, and if he's going to survive for the next couple of books.
Damn. Does this mean all our fic has been Jossed?
no subject
TBH, when we for sure found out Percy was the lost hero, my first thought was, "Oooh, maybe he's hanging out in Eris's place like in
I thought Piper might be a child of Hermes too when they the car stealing thing was mentioned, but I think I was eager to immediately identify them. She didn't get to do much as compared to Leo so I think it was hard to place her just with this chapter. Leo's a bit more solid though, and I just want more of him immediately.
I like your idea Zephyr being his dad! I didn't even think of that one. I really don't want it to be Zeus simply because it is too soon after Percy and Thalia for another kid of the Big Three to be the MC, and I'd really like to see someone from one of the cabins that wasn't featured heavily in a lead role.

I'm just reading all of the comments and being so UNBELIEVABLY PUMPED FOR THIS BOOK that I want to hammer out like 400 pieces of fic right now. I don't even know for what. Or how. But like you, my little shipper heart is made glad and I JUST WANT TO WRITE THINGS, OKAY.
PERCY IS GOING TO MAKE IT, DON'T EVEN SAY THAT, BECAUSE I THINK I WOULD DIE ALONG WITH HIM IF MY OTP IS RUINED.
I'm seriously marking Oct. 12 on my calendar and making someone else take my shift at the newspaper (I AM THINKING THAT FAR AHEAD) and possibly skipping classes that day so I can read that book.
no subject
Whatever your muse is telling you to do (well, so long as it is good and not SAD), just DO IT and listen. You'll be happy once you do, trust me. I once tried ignoring my muse and things didn't go so well. It wasn't pretty. I think every Percy/Annabeth shipper's heart is just going all kinds of crazy right now. No lie, mine is too.
*sobs* don't talk about Percy dying. I just........no. NO NO NO NO NO. He CAN NOT BE DEAD. That is NOT ALLOWED as an option. PERIOD.

I might have to do something along those lines as well. I'll most definitely be buying it THE DAY IT COMES out. There really is no other option, really. *grins*

I was definitely thinking the Roman thing too once Annabeth corrected Jason over the venti's name and just. Yes. Yes yes yes. That idea is so epic. Because seriously, how can you possibly top a war between gods and titans? By following it up with a war between two different pantheons of gods.
I am torn on Leo so how about this for a theory: Hermes and Hephaestus had a threesome with a mortal woman, and Leo is the unholy offspring of that union. I don't care if biology doesn't work that way.
Nico is totally looking for Percy too, and you know it. After Bianca and his mom, I just can't see Nico sitting by while everyone else looks for his big brother figure without him. But since he's Nico, of course he's going to go it his own way and make some sort of gruff tsuntsun excuse about how he can't shadow travel with all those kids hanging off him as ~*dead weight*~.
As for Piper, it's possible her dad might be Hermes. Really the only basis I have for this is the car/kleptomania thing, but also: Hermes killed Argus and gave his eyes to Hera, and she put them in the tail of the peacock. Well, Piper's eyes change color. I know, I'm reaching. Also, there's Calliope, goddess of eloquence, if we're going for goddesses. But I definitely do like Peitho.
Also? Also? I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE NEW CABINS AHHHHHHHHH
no subject
lmao, I love this theory. And who cares about Biology! If Annabeth can be a literal brain child, then by god, some demigod have two fathers. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN CANON, OF COURSE, BUT WE CAN ALWAYS DREAM.
God, I want Nico and Annabeth to be questing to get Percy back together so bad. They better fight over who gets to save Percy
because Percy/Annabeth/Nico needs to be canon NOWor Nico just needs to show up at some point along the way because you're right, there's no way he wouldn't look for Percy too. I'm really surprised he was the one that went to fetch the demigods with Annabeth, but then again, the pegasi don't like him and he probably can't travel in the sky either. RIORDAN, DON'T YOU LET ME DOWN WITH THE LACK OF NICO IN THIS NEW SERIES LIKE YOU DID WITH TLO, OKAY.I'm kind of Piper is a daughter of Hermes, just because we haven't seen any of them yet, but her eyes are definitely a clue to her parentage.
(no subject)

And the amnesia thing? It's kind of driving me crazy. But like you say, RR could write anything and I'd end up loving it to death.
I have nothing to say about the new kids' parentage, because it's really messing with me. Like, Leo could be a Hermes kid, but don't we already have enough of those? I think it's time for a Hephaestus kid to get some of the limelight.
- Going off of this, would Annabeth go on the quest to get Percy back.
I say yes. And it would give us more of a chance to get to know her without having an awkward teenage boy in the way.
no subject
Haha, oh Percy. Love him, but awkward teenage boy is definitely the best way to describe him. And I agree, I'd love to see Annabeth from a different POV, just because it would add so much more to her character.
I think the amnesia thing could turn out really well once Jason remembers who he is and stuff; good for potential angst. Hopefully it won't drag out through most of the book, but RR's pretty good about getting these sort of things squared away before he moves on to the bigger plot points.

I squealed like a child through the entire thing and I immediately grabbed onto Leo. I've always been really fond of Hermes so when I read the series, I kinda liked his kids by default. This ones more interesting though because like everyone else, I was thinking that he might be a Hephaestus kid, though I don't think Riordan would've gone out of his way to tell us that he was elfish looking, hyper and a prankster for nothing. :D
BTW, Annabeth's totally going on/hijacking that quest. She's definitely the type to take the reigns, especially since it's Percy that's missing. They come through for each other!
no subject
That's my only hesitancy with the Roman god theory. I know a lot of other gods across the world share the same kind of powers/duties, but I always figured the Olympians in PJO just posed as the Romans with new names for a while. It'd be really interesting to see if RR does go that route and see what explanation he'd come up with for that.

MY. THOUGHTS. EXACTLY.
To be quite honest I actually hope that this is the case.

Then her mother being immortal and her dad being famous makes sense.

And I completely agree with you about being irrationally happy when Percy was referred to as Annabeth's boyfriend. Plus, this takes place at least a year or two after TLO, which means that this is irrefutable proof that Percy and Annabeth are still going out after a few years, so people who think that Percabeth isn't going to last can go eat their words.
no subject
I was much the same way before the last Harry Potter- I completely stress out about these things...*sob* If Percy dies I'll cry. And kill someone.
The only thing that made me worry with bringing the old characters back though, is the fact they have the ability to die and there's also the tiny horrifying idea that Percy and Annabeth will break up (Gods forbid- it took them long enough to get together!)
As for the parentage...I think Leo's a son of Hephaestus. I don't know...he just strikes me as awfully Bekendorfish <--*mourns for a moment*. I have no clue as to Piper's mom. It wouldn't be her dad who's the God because of the way he's described I don't think.
I really have no idea about Jason. I like the four points of the compass theory best out of all the ones you guys have come up with, because I'm certain that Chiron mentioned in The Lightning Theif that the Roman Gods were the Greek Gods just under a different name. It t'would be rather epic to see a showdown between the two sets of Gods...but alas, I don't think it's possible.
I'm totally hoping for some serious Nico action in this series! He didn't get enough book-time last series for my liking- he's just so freaking AWESOME! And Annabeth is no way going to be left behind, not when it's Percy that's missing. She's going to be stomping around kicking some serious monster butt.
Alright...I'm going back to my worrying over in this corner *points* Throw the book at me when it comes and I shall try uber hard not to peek at the back to see if Percy's back yet (I love my life- I pre-ordered it.) Can you imagine what I'm going to be like if Percy isn't back yet though? I think I'll suffer from heart failure.
